Challenge

Be in the know... about a Global Epidemic and Silent Killer!

It’s estimated that more than 850 million people have kidney disease globally – which is roughly double the number of people with diabetes and 20 times more the prevalence of cancer or people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide!

Even more shocking is that 90% of people with kidney disease don’t know!!

Do you know if you or someone you care about is part of that 90% or at risk to be?

Join 1in9’s Do You Know? Challenge to help shatter the silence and the status quo, empower yourself and others, and save millions of kidneys and millions of lives… perhaps even your own!

Be In The Know

Be your own biggest advocate. Awareness, prevention and early detection are key to the health of your kidneys

Know Your Risk

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the 2 leading causes. Heart disease, obesity, lupus, a family history of kidney disease, acute kidney injury (AKI), frequent use of over-the-counter pain medications, and now even COVID-19 are risk factors

Know Your Numbers

Get a baseline on your kidneys with a simple blood test and urine test if you have any of the risk factors. Know what your GFR is, and know that the ideal target number is between 100-120.

The Triple Threat

Diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for 2/3 or more of the cases of kidney disease and kidney failure

Why Now...

In 2015, when 1in9 was birthed, there were 26 Million Americans – 1in9 adults – with kidney disease. Now there are over 37 Million Americans!

It’s projected that 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for kidney disease in their lifetime, and that by 2030 80 Million Americans will have kidney disease!

This is unacceptable!

I was part of that 90% that didn't know when my kidneys failed over 25 years ago at the age of 29. If my journey can help others and is what God destined as my purpose in life, then I would be willing to go back and do it all over again.

Additionally...

There are five stages of kidney disease, with stage 5 being kidney failure – where dialysis or a transplant are needed to survive. Unfortunately most people are not finding out that they have kidney disease until later stages, typically at stages 3, 4 or 5.

Roughly 80% of people starting dialysis in the U.S. do so in a crash setting, and 30-50% of patients starting on dialysis have never seen a nephrologist. To make matters worse, only 5% of nephrology practices provide education.

Diabetes and/or high blood pressure are responsible for two-thirds or more of the cases of kidney disease and kidney failure. And in the United States, Black Americans are nearly 4 times more likely to have kidney failure than White Americans.

The status quo is not working! Awareness, prevention and early detection is critical to turning these numbers around, to save kidneys and to save lives. And empowering individuals, families, communities, and nations is key.

1in9’s “Do You Know?” Challenge will shatter the status quo and silence around this silent killer, empower and challenge the public to “Be In The Know”, and save millions of kidneys and millions of lives across the U.S. and around the world.

In order to do so, we must reach the 90% that “don’t know” that they have kidney disease, the millions that do, and the millions who are at risk… and don’t even know it… or don’t know that they can do something about it.
